In 2001 when founder Mary K. Hoodhood discovered that some kids were digging through school trash to find something to eat, she decided to take action by starting a Sack Supper program. Growing from 125 to over 8,000 kids who receive sack suppers every weekday, Kids Food Basket provides meals for children facing hunger every day. Over a million meals were served last school year!
Each Sack Supper contains fruit, veggies, protein and a healthy snack, assembled by volunteers for delivery to 52 West Michigan locations every week day. Meals are distributed at schools with children living at or near the poverty level. (1 in 5 kids in Michigan are affected by hunger.)
In addition to providing nutritious meals, Kids Food Basket is growing through thousands of volunteers, with one-third being under age 18. Getting kids involved helps them develop skills to benefit their communities, beyond food insecurity. And, a brand new building with a 10-acre urban garden opened last fall to expand programs even farther, providing fresh produce for Sack Suppers.
Another creative way Kids Food Basket recruits volunteers is on the sacks themselves. Each paper sack is decorated with an “extra touch of love and caring” – the secret ingredient that makes all the difference. This is where we are recruiting you to be part of the action!
Bring your creativity to Convention 2020 to decorate Sack Supper bags. Share your love with creative coloring, encouraging messages, and just plain fun! All supplies will be provided.
