Convention 2020 - Where The Past Inspires the Future

Having had the opportunity recently to visit the Grand Rapids Public Museum with some special relatives, I discovered how exciting it is to experience Grand Rapids for the first time. And what better way to see so much of what GR has to offer all in one cool building! Even if you’re not into antique autos, Lake Michigan fish, an early furniture factory, or the 1928 carousel, all three floors are amazing for 2 year olds as well as every new visitor.

The Grand Rapids Public Museum, founded in 1854, is the oldest historical museum in Michigan. The new location was built in 1994 along the Grand River, and houses a planetarium, a high school, a café, and interactive exhibits adjoining thousands of historically significant collections. Stroll through a re-creation of Grand Rapids in the 1890s, visit the Newcomers exhibit, displaying the lifestyles of 45 ethnic groups who now call Grand Rapids home, and be sure to meet Finny, the mammoth whale skeleton, in a Virtual Reality experience.

TOYS! is possibly the best example of how a museum can connect past to future with a hands-on, multi-generation exhibit of toys and games that spark childhood memories and inspire the creation of new ones.

The museum is just across the river from the Amway Grand Plaza Hotel. Take a shortcut through the Curiosity Shop for some awesome Michigan souvenirs.
